Better Way Recovery Receives BBC Radio WM “Make a Difference” Award

Winners of the BBC Radio WM Make a Difference Awards 2025

On March 11th, 2021, Better Way Recovery became a registered charity. What began as a vision to create a safe, welcoming space for people affected by addiction has grown into a life-changing community movement — one that now supports hundreds of individuals and families across Staffordshire every week.

In October 2025, that dedication was recognised when Better Way Recovery won the BBC Radio WM Make a Difference Award in the Community Group category. The award celebrates local organisations making a positive impact in their area — and this year, Better Way Recovery stood out for its commitment to lived experience, connection, and hope.

Recognising Real Change Through Community

Addiction recovery often carries stigma and misunderstanding. Better Way Recovery was built to change that narrative — to prove that recovery is not only possible, but sustainable when people feel supported, understood, and empowered.

Through peer-led groups, drop-in sessions, and community outreach, the charity has helped create safe spaces where individuals can rebuild confidence and reconnect with purpose. Every member of the team has lived experience, allowing them to offer empathy, authenticity, and hope to everyone who walks through the door.

From One Vision to Many Communities

When founder Pete first opened the doors in Lichfield in 2021, the goal was simple — to give people in recovery somewhere local to turn for help. Since then, that single centre has grown into multiple thriving locations across Staffordshire, including Tamworth, Lichfield, Burntwood, and Burton.

Each centre provides access to peer-led recovery programmes, volunteer opportunities, and a network of understanding — available six days a week to anyone ready to take the first step.

Why This Award Matters

Winning the BBC Radio WM award isn’t just recognition for Better Way Recovery — it’s recognition for everyone in recovery. It shines a light on what’s possible when lived experience leads the way and when people come together to support one another without judgement.

As Pete, founder of Better Way Recovery, said on receiving the award:

“This isn’t about one person or one centre. It’s about every individual who’s ever walked through our doors and chosen to change their life. This award belongs to all of them.”

Looking Ahead

Better Way Recovery continues to grow, expanding its reach and impact across Staffordshire and beyond. With new partnerships forming and a dedicated team of volunteers and supporters, the charity remains committed to one clear mission — to make recovery visible, accessible, and achievable for all.

The award is a milestone — but it’s also a reminder that the real work happens every day, in every conversation, and in every act of support that helps someone believe in change again.
